Summer Waterfront Director

Full Time • North Hero, VT, Camp Abnaki
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Safety is the top concern for the Waterfront Director. It is the responsibility of the Waterfront Director to help safely organize and manage the waterfront area at Camp Abnaki, including all swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and sailing. This includes supervising lifeguards and camp staff at the waterfront, planning daily water activities for campers, and performing routine lifeguarding duties. The Waterfront Director will also support the camp program staff in developing theme days, evening activities, and weekend programming over the course of the summer.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  •  Minimum Requirement: Current Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, or the ability to obtain. 
  • Boater’s License, Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, Lifeguard Management, Waterfront Management, or Sailing certifications are a plus. 
  • Have the ability to interact with co-workers, campers, and the general public in a professional and effective manner. 
  • Have the ability to safely organize and manage a waterfront. 
  • Employees are expected to report to work at the scheduled time on a regular basis while completing work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner. 
  • Ability to live on site for the duration of the summer season. 
  •  Work cooperatively as a team member with all Camp Abnaki staff, modeling behavior supporting the YMCA mission and character values. 
  • Report to work on time as scheduled. 
  • Look professional: in proper uniform, alert, courteous and diplomatic. 
  • Carry appropriate equipment and be in appropriate location. 
  • Know and review proper emergency procedures with both campers and staff. 
  • Keep waterfront area clean and equipment in good working order, including performing daily checks on boats and other equipment for use by staff, campers, and guests. 
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings. 
  • Carry out all responsibilities as assigned by supervisors. 
  • Facilitate and guide the teaching of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility at Camp Abnaki. 
  • Help train, supervise, and evaluate the Assistant Waterfront Director, Sailing Coordinator, lifeguards, and other staff working on the waterfront. 
  • Work as part of the overall program team, which includes responsibilities in other areas of program set-up, as assigned by the Program Director. 
  • Help ensure waterfront safety guidelines and operations are maintained to American Camp Association standards at all times. 
  • Provide training for all staff on waterfront policies and emergency procedures. 
  • Perform Evening Watch, as assigned. 
  • Make decisions related to Lake Champlain conditions and the safe operation of waterfront programming. 
  • At the end of the summer, assist with performing a detailed inventory of supplies and ensure waterfront equipment, buildings, and supplies are put away.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, or sit. 
  • Ability to see close and far distances, effectively scan for hazards and potentially dangerous situations, and perform regular head counts. 
  • The ability to physically perform in-water rescues in accordance with training and proper protocols. 
  • The ability to be outside, whatever the weather, for significant amounts of time. 

Compensation: $750.00 per week
